Wolfgang Ischinger has been Chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) since 2008. MSC is the world's leading independent annual gathering of foreign and security policy decision-makers.

He is also Global Head of Public Policy and Economic Research, Allianz SE, Munich. Allianz SE, Europe's biggest investor, is among the largest global asset management and insurance companies.

Ambassador Ischinger has had a distinguished career in the German Foreign Service including service as the Federal Republic of Germany's Ambassador to London (2006-08), the German Ambassador to the United States (2001-06), and German Deputy Foreign Minister (1998-2001). In 2007, herepresented the European Union in the Troika negotiations on the future of Kosovo.

Wolfgang Ischinger studied law at the universities of Bonn and Geneva and graduated in 1972.With a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), he did graduate and postgraduate work in international law, economics, and political science at The Fletcher School where he earned his M.A., and at Harvard Law School.

From 1973-75, he served on the staff of the Secretary General of the United Nations in New York before joining the German foreign service where early assignments included the Policy Planning Staff of the Federal Foreign Office and the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. From 1982-90, he was a member of the cabinet of the Federal Foreign Minister. He became the Minister's Private Secretary in 1985 and Chief of the Parliament and Cabinet Division of the Federal Foreign Office in 1987. In 1990, he was appointed Minister and Head of the Political Section of the German Embassy to Paris. In 1993, he was named Director of the Policy Planning Staff of the Foreign Office and in 1995, he became Political Director-General of the Foreign Office.

Ambassador Ischinger has published widely on foreign and security policy in German, English and French. His articles have appeared in the Financial Times, the New York Times, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and many other significant papers and journals. Ambassador Ischinger has been an advisor to the Secretary-General of NATO as well as to the President of the Council of the European Union. In 2012, he was one of only two foreign personalities invited by President Hollande to participate in the French White Book Commission (Livre Blanc 2013).

He is Adjunct Professor in the Political Science Department of the University of Tuebingen. He has received numerous awards and serves on a variety of commissions and boards.
